1 Herodes. Este era Herodes Antipas, filho de Herodes, o Grande, com Maltace; tetrarca da Galiléia e Peréia, que produzia uma renda de 200 talentos por ano. Casou-se com a filha de Aretas, rei da Arábia, de quem se divorciou para casar com Herodias, a esposa do seu irmão Filipe, que ainda era vivo. Aretas, para vingar-se da afronta que Herodes tinha causado à sua filha, declarou guerra contra ele e derrotou-o depois de um combate obstinado. Esta derrota, Josefo nos assegura, foi considerada pelos judeus como castigo pela morte de João Batista. Ao ir para Roma solicitar o título de rei, foi acusado por Agripa de estar mantendo contatos com Artabanus, rei da Partia, contra os romanos, e foi banido pelo imperador Caio para Lyons, e de lá para a Espanha, onde ele e Herodias morreram exilados.
